MBA aspirants in India face a confusing alphabet soup of entrance exams. Each opens different doors. Here is how to think about them strategically.
CAT — for top IIMs and tier-1 private B-schools
If your target is IIM A/B/C/L, FMS, MDI, SPJain, or XLRI (via XAT) — CAT is non-negotiable. Aim for 95+ percentile.
MAT — flexible and frequent
MAT is held 4 times a year. Useful as a backup or for tier-2 B-schools. Easier than CAT but accepted by fewer top colleges.
CMAT — for AICTE-approved colleges
CMAT is a single exam that covers a large number of AICTE-approved B-schools. Score requirement is moderate.
MAH-CET — for Maharashtra-based students
For students aiming at Symbiosis (SCMHRD, SIBM), JBIMS, PUMBA, and other Maharashtra B-schools, MAH-CET is essential. Easier than CAT and only for Maharashtra residents.
